Major Stars - Decibels Of Gratitude LP

Twisted Village. Limited vinyl version of the eighth full-length studio album by this long-running Massachusetts ensemble; CD version is on Important Records. What to say about a band who continuously claims Otis Rush and Buddy Guy as its primary influences, but usually finds their records filed in the "noise/experimental" bin? Any mention of Major Stars tends to send some scurrying for the most obscure psychedelic references, but one need look no further than The Who or Cream to find the primary ingredients of melodic songwriting combined with an over-the-top instrumental assault. As a few noticed, the title of their last album Return to Form wasn't entirely intended to be tongue-in-cheek. Their music seems to be more "psychedelic era" than "psychedelic," and they themselves like to just be thought of as a Rock group (early '70s capitalization intact). But there has always been something different about their arrangement of common influences compared to their contemporaries, and over the past 15 years they have developed a loyal base of followers who seem to quite like the way they put things together. So Major Stars continue to put it together, like on this one: Decibels of Gratitude, from them, to you.

Omnivore - s/t LP

Feeding Tube Records. First album by Glenna Van Nostrand, a Cambridge, MA-based performance artist obsessed with archaic telecommunication hardware. Using solo vocals run through an old telephone, amplified by a variety of radios, her work creates its own rhythms through hypnotic layering, repetition and the imperfections built into her chosen delivery system. Alternately ethereal and cracked, her performance takes simple kernels of thought and speech, creating mystifying vistas of otherness that hint at the eternal now. The only specific musical accompaniment comes from her use of a telephone's touch pad as a keyboard, but the rich weirdness of her compositions is consistent and dazzling. The album was recorded, mixed, and mastered at Machines With Magnets with Keith Souza and Seth Manchester in Providence. Are you ready for two side-long slices of the Omnivore experience? Paul, Ashley - Line The Clouds LP

Rashley-paulEL Records. Multi-faceted composer and performer Ashley Paul releases her new LP. A hyper-intuitive record, where off-kilter instrumentation meets beautifully crafted melodies to convey the very essence of 'musicality,' Line the Clouds contains 44.18 minutes of sonic paradoxes and dichotomies. Stirring up a zephyr of twelve blissfully cacophonous sounds -- singular moments of an indivisible whole -- the focus is on guitar, voice and saxophone, but Ashley also employs everything from flute, clarinet, guitar, bells, percussion and prepared strings in her melodic endeavours which simultaneously plugs in the ghost of American song. From 'Wide Expanse' -- where high-pitched reeds and whistles collide with richer tones and Ashley's fragile voice -- through the simple, sparkling beauty of the LP's title track -- with the guitar at the helm -- and the multi-vocal flutterings of 'Watch Them Pass,' there's also the freeing experimentalism and atonal clatter of 'Feb.21' -- a song which ably immortalises a feeling of stomach churning anguish -- and the album's gentle, abstract finale 'You're a Feeling.' This Brooklyn based artist is at the vanguard of the new wave of music currently rippling through the city where opposing strains of style and sound work in unison. Line the Clouds will be available in a limited edition LP available on colored vinyl in a custom sealed package with screen printed wraparound of Ashley's animal drawings, in addition to a digital version."
