Alvarius B - vs Abdel Baqy Byro In Cairo LP

NAlvarius b cairoashazphone. Seemingly tossed-off spontaneity is the intoxicant with which Alvarius B vs Abdel Baqy Byro in Cairo is heavily laced. This 39-minute lenticular collage recalls Tangier-era Burroughs in its concealment of structure behind a veneer of arbitrary free association, with Alvarius B. delivering his take on contemporary behavioral dementia in a style that veers from the nocturnal yammer of legendary somniloquist Dion McGregor to salty neo-Yossarian ravings to the casual vitriol of a misanthrope who knows he's entertaining. It's the kind of trip a modern-day Slothrup might take after smoking polyester shrubbery and over-indulging in candiru sushi served by an erotic topiary gardener in exile for masturbating on the wall outside a 19th Century French orphanage - overseen by The Sinister Extemporizer himself, Alan Bishop. It was recorded live all over Cairo (in cars, trains, apartments, garages, cafes, bars, on rooftops, on the street) with a backline that includes little else beyond an acoustic guitar and a radio. Field recordings, glitchy wheeze underpinnings, and snippets of space murble garnish the album, but site-specific stuffing is what gives this kataif its particular flavor: a rapped tribute to the murdered members of a hardcore soccer fan-club; a pas de deux for laptop keyboard and BBC's coverage of Gaza bombings; public demonstrations against the Muslim-Brotherhood-authored Constitution; Monte Carlo Arabic Service's mention of the 70th anniversary of El Alamein battle. Bishop's quilt of screenshots depicts a consciousness informed by an increasingly universal presumption that everything public should be interactive, if only to act as a vessel for contempt. An urbane cannibal fills the twilight bazaar with bacterial karaoke and falsetto bleating slicker than a goat's uterus before disappearing into the crowd at Snotty's Chill-Out Pentagram. Turn a corner and it's an improv duet for acoustic guitar and the pachyderm grind of dirty delivery trucks. All around is mysteriously auto-tuned, proto-mahragan R'n'B crooning right out of a Saharan cellphone rave. A blue-blood places a call to an amplified insect tantrum, and is eavesdropped upon by a seductress loop. Delusional arms suppliers mansplain, as is their wont, and a beautifully dismissive monologue reduces music writers to literary dumbwaiters. The Invisible Hands take a moment to get in touch with their inner Sex Pistol. Prerecorded announcements are abused, quite comedically - the implication being that the only qualifications needed to engage in public discourse (telegenics and a piehole) are grossly insufficient. Alan Bishop stands before you not to praise anything (especially not the pathetic aesthetic championed by pork brosnans and Illuminati blood-drinkers stumbling from one end of their bleachy little swamp to the other, where mediocre meets bland and no amount of chlamydia-flavored tofutti with ground up glass in it will protect them from the constant tularemia rain), but to bury it, deep on the shoreline of Dunning-Kruger, a parting gift from The Sibling Unmoored as he withdraws in disgust. Maybe he'll return after Ramadan, if only to crack open what's left of their skulls like crème brulée, harvest the enlarged amygdala, and render tiny portraits of Pepe The Frog onto their lacerated morgellons. Maybe not." --Seymour Glass California, USA September 2016.

Bishop, Sir Richard - Salvador Kali 2LP

EBishop, Richard - Salvador Kalixiled. Originally released on cd by John Fahey's Revenant in 1998. This was released following a run of peak Sun City Girls activity (330,003 Crossdressers, Dante's Disneyland Inferno) and came as something of a shock; a stunningly beautiful instrumental album that was entirely accessible! Composed and recorded free of the burden of expectation, his debut album marked Bishop as a force operating on his own plane. A fairly significant departure from the freewheeling nature of the Sun City Girls, Salvador Kali is a concise album in which he explores the hallmarks of his style: North African influences, Spanish flamenco, Indian raga and a fiery take on Django Reinhardt's Rose Room. The epic 14 minute solo piano fantasia, Al-Darazi is saved for all of side C. There is an incredible cinematic feel to the album as it's vibe runs from pieces that could be in a Satyajit Ray film to a lost Antonioni sequence set on the Mediterranean in the 1970's. Ironic that it was released by John Fahey, as it is was one of the few solo guitar albums to be free of the long shadow cast by Fahey. My favorite Sir Richard Bishop album on vinyl, at last! Edition of 500 copies." (out : soon :)  )

Bozulich, Carla - Red Headed Stranger 2LP

bozulich folktaleFolktale. When Carla Bozulich set out to record a cover of this classic Willie Nelson concept album, she never dreamed that Willie Nelson himself would be interested in playing on it. Sure enough, a few weeks after he'd heard a tape on his tour bus, Carla was in his Austin studio recording duets with him. When frequent collaborator Nels Cline formed the all-instrumental Nels Cline Singers with Scott Amendola on drums and Devin Hoff on upright bass, it turned out that they were all closet country fanatics and there was a convergence of sorts around The Red Headed Stranger. Her idea of combining seemingly odd elements (jazz, improvisation, raga, caberet) with a traditionally country feel was brought to life by these highly inventive players. During a 24-date tour in April, 2002, Tzadik recording artist Jenny Scheinman joined the quartet on violin for a few shows and added soul and character to the recordings.

Carla has been recording and performing music since the early 1990s and has played in the groups: The Geraldine Fibbers, Scarnella, Ethyl Meatplow, and Evangelista, just to name a few. She is perhaps best known for the range of her powerful voice and the intensity of her on stage performances.

This is the first time this album has been released on vinyl. It was originally released as a compact disc on Dicristina Stair Builders in 2003. This version includes the bonus track "Lonesome Roads" which was written by Carla and originally appeared on the compact disc compilation For A Decade of Sin on Bloodshot Records.

Released in a pressing of 500 records on 140 gram black vinyl. Records come in a hand die-cut chipboard jacket with a photograph inserted in it and a screen-printed backside. Includes a Risograph print insert on heavy chipboard and a digital download card.

Dorji, Tashi & Tyler Damon - Both Will Escape LP

Fdorji-tashi-tyler-damon-both-will-escape-lp-098682-d96e8cf4amily Vineyard. "Both Will Escape" is the debut full-length between electric guitarist Tashi Dorji and percussionist Tyler Damon. In the long tradition of string/drum duets -- from Bailey & Bennink to Haino & Yoshida -- these two cleave out their own unmapped continent of sound. Across four pieces they connect lashes of ecstatic intensity and outer reaches of texture and timbre. At times Dorji's brutal electric torrents meld into Damon's metal and tonal abstractions. These two developed in parallel for years before forging an ongoing duo in 2015. Dorji has released a string of startling acoustic albums that've rescrambled six-string notions of jazz/improv/Flamenco. Damon's rethink of overtone and rhythm is enraptured as it's stupefying in solo exhibitions or with Mars Williams, Darin Gray and Thee Open Sex. Edition of 500 LPs with download coupon." Hound Dog Taylor's Hand - s/t LP

AHound Dog Taylor'sbduction 2016. Abduction Records present the first vinyl LP release of Hound Dog Taylor's Hand. The trio consists of Jeffery Taylor (Climax Golden Twins/AFCGT/Spider Trio) on electric guitar, Mark Ostrowski (Monktail/Wally Shoup Quartet) on drums and John Seman (Monktail/Ask The Ages) on contrabass. The music is a heavy dose of jazz, blues, and improvisation. Sharp and destructive yet cerebral and clever, these tracks finally expose one of Seattle's best-kept secret treasures to the world as the only way you could have heard them, before would have been at one of their extremely rare live shows in the Puget Sound area or from their locally produced cassette from a few years back. The second track on side one titled "Beatrice", features Climax Golden Twins and Beatrice Harrison. Edition of 500.

Kang, Eyvind & Jessica Kenney - Reverse Tree LP

"BKang Kenneylack Truffle is thrilled to announce Reverse Tree, the new LP from the acclaimed duo of Eyvind Kang and Jessika Kenney, two musicians who have established themselves as powerful voices working at a unique intersection of contemporary composition, improvisation, and Asian traditional music forms. Either individually or as a pair, they have worked in contexts ranging from performances of traditional Persian and Javanese music to collaborations with Sunn O))), but their work together as a duo (documented on The face of the earth and Aestuarium, both released on Ideological Organ/Editions Mego) most clearly represents the central concerns of their diverse practices: a music of the inner life of sound, demanding ritualistic focus and promising heightened sensations." Karkhana - Nafas/Nefes 7"

Kkarkhanaarkhana.......have you heard of them ? Besides the Dwarfs Of East Agouza it is the hottest new band around. Trust me with this.

Karkhana consists of musicians from Beirut, Cairo & Istanbul ,they are a string based orchestra with some  percussion added.  Sam Shalabi is in the band, Maurice Louca is , Sharif Sehnaoui &Mazen Kerbaj are and recently it’s Umut Caglar and Ozun Usta as well. Names you know from your  A Trio, Dwarfs Of East Agouza, Maurice Louca & Johnny Kafta, etc. records.

They had an album on Italian blend Sagittarius A-Star which was sold out quicker as you can say Karkhana. It’s histoy now. But they have a new limited 7” which will probably does not get into your next door record-shop.  It contains simply two of the best new songs I’ve heard this year so far, honestly.  Artwork is from Mazen Kerbaj, who did (well, not only) the drawing inside the A Trio w/ Alan Bishop LP.  Make sure to get your copy now…

Millis, Rob - The Lonesome High LP

Amillis, rob lonesomebuction. Robert Millis is known for many things - co-founder of Climax Golden Twins, Messenger Girl's Trio, and AFCGT; filmmaker and producer for the Sublime Frequencies label; co-producer of the Victrola Favorites book and cassette series. Now, thanks to The Lonesome High, he'll be known as a singer/songwriter. After listening to his stunning debut album, you'll be wondering where the fuck this side of Millis has been lurking all along. He's been performing some of these tracks live for the past few years crafting them to where they are now - tilted perspectives lodged somewhere between the grittier climate zones of the the Rain Dogs (1985) plateau and a more psychotic trailer park way out on the Death Of A Lady's Man (1977) peninsula. Millis really delivers the goods here. The songwriting has depth, stinging clarity and vaporizing ambiguity. The more upbeat tracks like "The Run Around", "Down In The Hold" and "Tricky" have an immediate classic familiarity - hear them once and you're hooked. But The Lonesome High becomes a monster statement thanks to "Marvelous Fool", "Charming Chisel", "Notes On A Scandal", and "Drowsy Sleeper". It's the stark cryptic beauty and detached awareness of these four ballads that define the heart and soul of this record. So if you're looking for a contemporary troubadour who can actually deliver a solid 40 minutes of listening pleasure (not an easy task these days), you'll find it right here in spades. Features percussion by Dave Abramson (Diminished Men/Master Musicians Of Bukkake), backing vocals by Alan Bishop (Alvarius B/Sun City Girls). Front cover art by Jesse Paul Miller; Includes a download card.

MV&EE - Root/Void LP

Wmvee-rootoodsist. MV & EE take their homespun hypnotics and cosmic country sounds to new levels on Root / Void. I love this album— it trips hard and hauntingly—a gift for languid golden afternoons or late night moonlight powwows. Anthem-worthy tape edits on some cuts crack open surreal and cinematic vistas. While joined by fellow travelers here and there, this album remains in essence a fecund duet from two entwined souls, updating and re-defining their unique pool of sound. Six Organs Of Admittance - Burning The Threshold LP

DSix Organs - Burningrag City. This record is the first non-hexadic acoustic oriented record since 2011’s Asleep On The Floodplain. It features a few friends throughout the record (Alex Neilson, Chris Corsano, Haley Fohr, Cooper Crain, Damon and Naomi, Ryley Walker).  The acoustic guitar was recorded at Gladtree Studios in Vermont (see below post for photo of the shed I recorded in). The tracks were then taken to Chicago where the record was finished by recording with Cooper Crain (Bitchin Bajas) in a few locations.

V/A - Kwangkay: Funerary Music Of The Dayak Benuaq Of Borneo LP

Skwangkayublime Frequencies. Numbering less than 1000 people, the Dayak Benuaq from the Eastern Kalimantan region of Indonesian Borneo still practice many of their traditional ceremonial customs. This album of field recordings presents the music associated with the kwangkay, the secondary mortuary ritual celebrated by the Dayak Benuaq, recorded live on location by Vincenzo Della Ratta. According to the Benuaq belief system, upon death the soul of the human being is transformed into the liau, associated with the physical body, and the kelelungan, associated with the intellect or the head. Both the liau and the kelelungan temporarily reside in a sort of cosmic location, connected respectively with the bones and the skull of the deceased, who has entered a state of deep unconsciousness, as yet neither pertaining completely to the realm of the living, nor to that of the dead. Music plays a key role within the kwangkay, as it is crucial for guiding the liau and kelelungan spirits to their final destinations. It is also intended to please the spirits of the dead by providing them with entertainment. This ritual includes a night dance performed for the spirits and accompanied by a musical piece known as the ngerangkau. These rites and ceremonies are often dedicated to several deceased persons and are held within a house belonging to one of their family members. Featured here are two different versions of the ngerangkau, with their long, trance-inducing rhythmic gong patterns. There are two more tracks on the album which are not specifically related to the kwangkay. "Titi Mati" is a gong piece commonly played to proclaim the recent death of a villager. And finally, a nocturnal soundscape of a village by the river Mahakam, a channel of transport and communication which is essential for the local people of the Benuaq territories. Limited edition LP; includes insert of text and images by Vincenzo Della Ratta.

V/A - Music Of The Bahnar People From The Central Highlands Of Vietnam LP

SMusic Of The Bahnarublime Frequencies present a collection of music from the Bahnar people who live in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. The Bahnar are famous for their rich musical culture and this is perhaps the first-ever release to introduce the full range of Bahnar musical instruments and styles, including gong ensemble, bamboo zither, bamboo xylophone, bamboo fiddle with mouth resonator, and folk songs. Melodic and hypnotic, this music was selected from recordings made in the Kon Tum province from 2006 to 2015 by Eisuke Yanagisawa. One of many highlights of these recordings is a most unusual and stunning instrument - the bamboo fiddle with mouth resonator - which creates an effect that is on one hand an organic auto-tuner of sorts and on the other Peter Frampton coming alive on his 1970s talk-box. The Bahnar's music has been passed down through the ages in each village but is now endangered because of cultural assimilation related to changes in their lifestyles and living environment. These recordings preserve for us the vestiges of a traditional music culture that might no longer be heard in the near future. Includes performances by Kaly Tran And His Ensemble, A Wen, A Thut And His Ensemble, Gong Ensemble Of Kon Kotu Village, Y Tham & A Hieu, A Thao and Gong Ensemble Of The Long Loi Village. Limited edition LP; includes insert of text and images by Eisuke Yanagisawa.
